THE SIGNIFICANCE OF GEOECONOMICS FOR NATION-STATES: A CASE STUDY OF ROMANIA

Abstract
The paper deals with the complex issues of the geostrategic and geoeconomic position of Romania in the context of Russian aggression against Ukraine. The geographical position of Romania is extremely important for NATO, because it connects it to the Black Sea, which thus becomes the main gateway to Europe via the port of Constanţa, Constanţa Sud-Agigea and the Danube-Black Sea canal and the main Ponto-Caspian interface with the West. Located in the central zone of the geopolitical system of the inland continental seas, Romania has become the „eastern key” for NATO and EU relations with Russia, Asia and the Arab states. The paper gives special importance to the Black Sea strategy as part of the Romanian maritime, security and energy strategy. The geo-economic position of the Romanian nation-state can use its energy potential to achieve its political, security and economic goals, especially when it comes to Moldova.
