Abstract
This article focuses on the cultural and social aspects of
migrant integration into the host society, with particular
emphasis on Ukrainians who arrived in Slovakia before the
beginning of the war. The study aims to gain a deep un-
derstanding of how language competence influences the
success of migrants’ adaptation, their participation in so-
cial relations, and the development of a sense of belonging
within the new sociocultural environment. In the context
of increasing migration in Central Europe, the relationship
between language skills and integration processes becomes
especially relevant, since language functions not only as a
tool of communication but also as an important component
of identity and cultural self-determination.
The first part of the article presents a theoretical overview
of the concept of cultural integration in the academic dis-
course. The empirical section of the study is based on a se-
ries of semi-structured interviews with Ukrainian migrants
residing in different regions of Slovakia. This method makes
it possible not only to identify general trends but also to cap-
ture individual differences in the perception of integration,
motivation to learn the language, and assessment of personal
experiences in interaction with the local community. The in-
terviews demonstrate that the level of proficiency in the Slo-
vak language directly affects the quality of social connec-
tions, access to the labour market, the education system, and
even migrants’ self-esteem. Those who actively study the
language and use it in daily communication report a higher
level of trust from local residents and a stronger sense of
belonging to society.
