Abstract

The article deals with a comparison of the relationship between cultural practices and social inequalities in Croatia and eight other European countries (Denmark, Finland, France, the Netherlands, Serbia, Spain, Switzerland, and Great Britain), investigated within the Horizon 2020 INVENT project through surveys conducted in 2021. An expanded notion of cultural participation was applied in the analysis. We used the usual art-related indicators of cultural practices but also those related to everyday culture. Both sets of indicators included offline and online practices. In analysing social inequalities, alongside economic and cultural capital as the usual indicators of inequality, we also examined digital competences, which are conceptualised in the analysis as embodied digital capital. The results indicate that, among all the investigated countries, Croatia is at the very bottom of the list when it comes to participation in art-related practices (both online and offline). Furthermore, women in Croatia participate less in everyday cultural practices outside the home, although, like in other investigated countries, they lead in offline art-related practices. The impact of education on participation in offline art-related practices is stronger in Croatia than in any other country studied, as is the gap between respondents with the highest and lowest levels of digital competence. The article concludes by considering the implications of the research findings for cultural policy.
