Abstract

The Montenegrin-Bosnian writer Marko Vešović (1945-2023) frequently explored the theme of death throughout his rich and exceptionally complex oeuvre. In the final stage of his life, following the death of his wife Gordana, a period which Vešović, drawing inspiration from Laza Kostić, designated as the “era without her”, death becomes the central theme of his poetic work. His prose and poetic reflections on dying, death, and the experience of confronting the loss of a loved ones were compiled under the title Njih tri The Three of (2016). Drawing on this (auto) thanatographic writing, this paper begins by outlining the defining features of thanatography as a distinct subgenre of (auto)biography. The central section of the paper will seek to explore how Vešović articulates the death of his mother Darinka and beloved wife Gordana, conveys the experience of loss and solitude, and, for the first time, questions the very meaning of writing.
