Abstract

This presentation analyses the surviving correspondence of Trankvil Andreis
and Antun Vrančić with particular reference to the group of letters from 1538.
Fourteen letters have been considered – thirteen already published in the Szalay
– Wenzel edition of the collected works of Vrančić and one previously unpublished Andreis letter of 1570 kept in the Diocesan Archives in Györ. After a
brief review of the entire epistolary corpus, the work centres on the missives of
1538, which tell of the renewal of the contact of the two humanists, as well as
of the tension created by the politically inflammatory texts of Andreis. Particular
attention is given to the brief and harsh Andreis letter of July 11, 1538, preserved
in the transcript made by Vrančić, as well as the latter’s subsequent attempts to
persuade Andreis to speak more circumspectly and to seek the royal clemency.
The final part of the paper considers Vrančić’s request that Andreis send him an
example of the contentious text, as well as the terminological difference between
Vrančić’s mention of a dialogue and Andreis’ epistle about Lodovico Gritti. The
paper cautiously suggests an interpretation according to which Vrančić’s renewal
of his contact with Andreis was not entirely prompted by friendly concern but also
by the wish to verify the content of the manuscript that could prove damaging to
the reputation of King John Zapolya.
