Abstract

In this paper the author analyses the complex structure of the political novel "Banket u Blitvi" by Miroslav Krleža, with special reference to the writer's poetics. In the analysis, the author starts from the diary entries of the war and postwar years, "Davni dani", where, in her opinion, Krleža's poetics was best defined and his basic relations to philosophy, history and politics were expressed. The author also gives a special analysis of the puppet theatre, which the writer includes in his novel as well as his intertextual relationship with tradition. She also portrays his characters, proving in the process that the writer's psychological characterizations, even in this phase of expressionism, maintained the potential of his early creative period. A special emphasis is placed on carnivalism, the concept of "theatrum mundi", and this all establishes a new approach to Krleža's poetics and his relationship to Croatian and European Renaissance tradition in particular.
