Abstract

The purpose of the paper is to give an overview of the specific ‘replacement of jat" in the vernacular of Podgorica, which resulted in a strict linguistic distinction between the representatives of various confessions in this town (Muslims and Christians). Special attention is placed on the ikavica spoken by the Muslims in Podgorica as a phenomenon which caused different interpretations by different
authors and which is due to the fact that its existence is not typical of Montenegro where ijekavica is spoken. On analyzing all the previous interpretations of this phenomenon, the author gives his own explanation concluding that it represents a case of an autochthonous vocal process.
