Braille communication competency - understanding the single cell Braille code system and implementation in the complex Braille code pattern of literary and math Braille context

Abstract
Different aspects of Braille have been analyzed in the past: professionals and their Braille competency, speed of reading literary and math Braille, influence of the Braille code development on using Braille etc. Specific difficulties generate depending upon language and code development level . The qualitative analysis of the meaning of the all (63) single cell Braille code in literary and math contexts gives the first systematic overview of the Braille code in Croatia. The characteristic dimensions that make the Croatian national Braille notation is explained. The problem areas are defined and some possible solutions are presented and supported by the contemporary documents. The basic dimensions of Braille as the communication and education media, the Braille competency in the community of blind and sighed Braillist are critically reviewed. Discrepancies in different Braille contexts are also discussed. Finally the Braille communication competence is correlated with the evolution of the Braille national notation and influence of human resources upon development of Braille in the community. The analysis of the Braille
single cell code helped determining the contextual development level of Braille in Croatia.
