Sažetak
In recent years, there has been a rapid increase in the incidence of autism spectrum disorders (ASD), which manifest as an impairment in social interactions and communication and the presence of limited and repetitive patterns of behavior. The field of ASD has seen significant changes since the release of the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) in 2013. This paper presents a case study examining high-functioning autism (HFA), a condition falling under the category of ASDs that is typically characterized by a better prognosis and less noticable difficulties than those previously mentioned. This paper describes the professional support provided over five months to a boy whose developmental profile is indicative of HFA. The goal of the support provided was oriented towards improving communication and language abilities. Key aspects of this support included: reduction of echolalia; improvement of pragmatic abilities; and the expansion of language comprehension, expressive lexicon and the morfosyntactical complexities of utterances. For the purpose of monitoring the boy's development and the effectiveness of the support provided, all intervention sessions were video-recorded. In addition, a questionnaire completed by the boy's mother was used in the analysis. An examination of the data indicated significant improvement in all targeted aspects of communication and language. Together, these findings highlight the importance of the interaction between a number of factors: the inclusion of children in developmentally apropriate forms of professional support, the participation of pre-school institutions, the partnership between parents and professionals, as well as an emphasis on encouraging communication and language that can, in turn, lead to improved connections with peers and a higher quality of social skills.
