The Kempf Family Donation

Sažetak
Family donations are one of the ways in which museum
objects are collected; they are an indication of the trust of
citizens and their wish to be through their gifts a part of the
historical story of their home town and city. They tell of the
mutual family relations, of the social status, political stances
of the givers and the quality of their lives. The Kempf Donation
started from the very beginnings of the work of the Museum,
even before its foundation, the moment when at the end of
the 19th century Julije Kempf began collecting material for the
writing of the great Požega monograph Požega, geographical
notes from the environs and contributions for a history of the
free and royal city of Požega and the Požega County. Assembling contributions for the museum holdings, Julije Kempf, the
founder of the Museum in 1924, the first curator and director,
encouraged Požega people, his friends, known and influential
citizens, to give to the museum objects from their families,
becoming in this way part of the local history. His son Branimir and other members of the family kept in their birth house
many objects of museum value, in the opinion that this was
their natural setting. However, Branimir’s sons, Davorin and
Božidar, when the older members of the family had gone,
started giving them in larger quantities to the Museum, from
2000 to 2013. The connection between users of the museum
programmes and the Požega Municipal Museum is interactive,
and often our visitors, the users of the material, are also our
associates, donors and in the end our friends.
