THE ACCENT OF PROTO-SLAVIC *SЬRDЬCE
Mate Kapović
Sažetak
The paper deals with the problem in the reconstruction of the accent of Proto-Slavic *sьrdьce "heart". Slovene srcệ, Russian сердце (зá сердце), pl. сердцá and Bulgarian сърдце seem to point to *sьrdьce, same as Croatian sȑce, nȁsrce, but Croatian variant
sȑce, nà srce and sȑdašce point to Proto-Slavic *sьrdьce. In the paper the reflexes of this word in each Slavic language is being discussed and the problems of the both variants of the reconstruction in the Proto-Slavic itself. This problem is in close relationship with the question of the shortening of the long circumflex in trisyllabicwords of the type '-V:-ь-V-. In the end, it is concluded that for Proto-Slavic the accentual paradigm c form, *sьrdьce, is to be reconstructed and that the long circumflex is shortened in the trisyllabic words of the type '-V:-ь-V- in Croatian.
