Conflict of Family and Work Roles: Causes, Effects and Unsolved Research Problems
Mira ČUDINA-OBRADOVIĆ
Josip OBRADOVIĆ
Sažetak
The authors analyze concepts and problems in research of the
work-family interface, i.e. the interrelation of the family and
work stress and strain and the influence of both types of conflict
on the individual's job and life satisfaction, health and well-
-being. Also, the research results are reviewed and special attention
is given to complex models that take into account numerous
determinants of the work-family interface (job involvement,
family and job stress, family support, work-family conflict
and family-work conflict) as well as the consequences of the
work-family conflict (work and life satisfaction, psychological
and physical health and alcohol abuse). The inconsistencies
and contradictions of the research results are pointed out and
the unsolved problems are identified and defined. The problem
of a spillover or segregation of different domains of conflict is
stressed as the main unresolved issue which is important both
from the theoretical and practical point of view. The authors
claim that it is of utmost importance to find out whether individuals
spill over the dissatisfactions from one domain to all other
life domains, or whether they are capable and under what condition
to compartmentalize various domains of dissatisfaction
into disparate segments of subjective experiences and maintain
by this a feeling of general life satisfaction and happiness.
