Abstract

Insects represent an excellent source of high-quality and easily-digestible proteins for monogastric domestic animals. In comparison to conventional protein sources, insects in feed are characterized by a higher essential amino acid content, better amino acid digestibility, and lower production prices, making them an attractive substitute. However, according to the current legislation, insects and processed insect products do not presently have a significant share in feed production in the European Union, though this can be expected to change in the near future. Since 2017, insect-derived proteins are permitted for use in for aquaculture, while their use in other categories of monogastric domestic animals is under consideration. This study outlines the nutritional characteristics of insects, their applicability and the latest legal regulations related to the use of this type of animal protein.
