Sažetak

Frontal form of teaching has recently been replaced with teaching forms directed at the student. The student thereby participates in creating and realizing the educational process and the teacher has the role of a moderator. By applying different teaching strategies of active learning, we encourage student anticipation and active participation. Considering that the efficiency of different methods of active learning depends on presented problems and student motivation, we chose a current topic through examining microbiological purity of mobile devices owned by students of V, VI, VII and VIII grades (ages 11 – 14) of Antun Bauer Elemantary School in Vukovar. We determined bacterial purity of mobile devices using the print method. Bacterial colonies on ready-to-use „Sanibact PV Plate count agar + ttc + neutralizing /Violet red bile glucose (VRBG) agar + neutralizing“ plates were counted and microscoped. Discussion followed the practical part of the lesson. Students filled in output cards and made digital posters, they chose a topic connected to one of the project activities. Our goal was organising lessons where the student is an active subject and the emphasis is on comprehensive learning encouraging students to independently learn how to find information, how to process and use them. Along with the current topic, experiential learning and different activities, the students acquired the planned educational outcomes considering age, topic and curriculum of Science (V and VI grades) and Biology (VII and VIII grades) as well as that of the cross-curriculum topic Health. General teaching goals should be included into the educational process from the earliest childhood considering that the task of modern teaching is to prepare the student for changes and new challenges for the purpose of nurture, education and lifelong learning. Teaching based on student activity is very productive if the students are motivated to analyze the results of their activities, successfully reach conclusions and if they are offered ways of applying this knowledge in everyday life.
