Sažetak

The article makes an attempt at a unified conceptualization of stylistic theories. Therefore, a three-dimensional space of style should be considered. One axis of this space describes rhetorical theories of style, the other refers to holistic theories, and the third relates to normative theories. First, rhetorical theories are distinguished by their instrumental nature and connection with the speaker’s intention. In this regard, theories of three styles are considered. The actual rhetorical understanding is found in the “Rhetoric to Herennium”, the treatises of Cicero and Quintilian. Among modern theories, media stylistics and creative stylistics are of a similar kind. Second, holistic theories of style do not approach the phenomenon of style from a normative or instrumental point of view and leave wide scope for hermeneutical thought. It is noted that among modern stylists the most consistent advocate of holism is academician Stanislav Gajda. Similarly, the theory of epochal styles by academician D.S. Likhachev can be considered. Third, normative theories of style have a long history, the culmination of which is the theory of norms developed by the Prague Linguistic Circle. This theory is reflected in modern functional stylistics. However, the article provides criticism of Soviet functional stylistics. Finally, it is concluded that style is either a tool (rhetoric), or a mediator of identity (holistic theories), or a mediator of relevance (functional stylistics).
