The Croatian Rousing Song (davorija) Nek se hrusti šaka mala in Slovak Musical Culture

The song Nek se hrusti šaka mala [Let the Little Fist Clench] belongs to the corpus of (Croatian) patriotic/revivalist and (Czech and Slovak) revolutionary songs from the first half of the 19th century. Within the context of Croatian musical history, it needs no introduction, but its fate in the broader Slavic world remained more assumed than truly known for a long time. The author of this study published research on the song’s reception in the Czech environment. This work now continues with its reception in the Slovak environment. Slovak revivalists were drawn to the song’s patriotic message even before 1848. Within a few years, several noteworthy contrafacta emerged, which this study presents and contextualises in detail. In the Czech environment, the song received deeper musicological reflection. The situation in Slovakia was different: the song did not enter art music, but remained in its original form as a Slavic revolutionary song.
