Sažetak
This paper examines the semantic constituents of narrative in the novels of Ernesto Sábato—El túnel (The Tunnel), Sobre héroes y tumbas (On Heroes and Tombs), and Abaddón, el Exterminador (The Angel of Darkness). The study is grounded in both classical and contemporary narratological theory, drawing on the concepts of narrative instance, focalisation, possible worlds, narrative cognition, and stylistic discourse analysis. Its primary objective is to investigate how narrative perspective, the organisation of the fictional world, patterns of verbal and non-verbal communication, and the fragmentation of narrative structure contribute to the production of meaning in Sábato’s fiction. The analysis demonstrates that meaning in these novels is generated not only through explicitly articulated content but also through silence, gaze, gesture, semantic indeterminacy, shifts in perspective, and discursive discontinuities. Existential loneliness, communicative uncertainty, and the instability of identity emerge as persistent features of Sábato’s narrative universe. The study therefore argues that meaning is constructed not merely at the thematic level but also through the formal organisation of narration itself, confirming the intrinsic relationship between narrative form and the process of meaning-making.
