Sažetak
The article explores the cooperation between the Bishop of Križevci, Dionisije Njaradi, and the Metropolitan of Halych and Archbishop of Lviv, Andrey Sheptytsky, based on Njaradi’s letters to Sheptytsky written between 1902 and 1938. The collection, comprising 168 letters, is stored at the Central State Historical Archive of Ukraine in Lviv. The first part of the article describes the ecclesial and socio-political environment in which both bishops operated, beginning with the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, where both the Eparchy of Križevci and the Metropolia of Halych were situated, and then examining the upheavals of the interwar period. The second chapter presents several challenges of the interwar period as reflected in the correspondence. These challenges were closely tied to protecting the national, cultural, and religious identity of Greek Catholics from the former Austro-Hungarian regions who, after the Empire’s collapse, found themselves within the borders of different states, often facing pressures of assimilation and proselytism. The third chapter describes several specific joint initiatives undertaken by Metropolitan Sheptytsky and Bishop Njaradi. These include the establishment of ecclesiastical jurisdiction for Ukrainian Greek Catholic migrants in Bosnia, involvement in the appointment of a bishop for Greek Catholic migrants in the United States, and the organization of assemblies of Greek Catholic bishops. The conclusion highlights that both hierarchs’ responses to the political upheavals were primarily pastoral, focusing on strengthening the spiritual identity of the faithful and addressing their social needs.
