Sažetak

The first organized activities by Krk residents aimed at preparing and defending the island of Krk from the looming Greater-Serbian aggression against Croatia began on 4 December 1990 when the Krk Island Defence Command was established. On that same day, the first conscription of Krk’s hunters and a reserve police contingent was conducted. The "Krk draft" of the new Constitution of the Republic of Croatia was written in the Hotel Palace, part of the former Haludovo hotel complex in Malinska, from 1 through 15 August 1990. Thus, the fundamental legal instrument that created the conditions for democratic revolutionary movements in Croatia’s territory, the "birth" of Croatian democracy and the creation of a free and independent Republic of Croatia was written on the island of Krk. Due to the importance of commercial and infrastructure facilities on the northern part of the island of Krk, the members of the 4th Krk Battalion of the 111th Rijeka Brigade of the National Guard Corps (Zbor narodne garde, ZNG) already assumed posts on 2 July 1991 to defend the Rijeka Airport, which was the first successful military operation conducted by any units of the ZNG’s 111th Brigade. From November 1991 to January 1992, Croatian soldiers from Krk courageously fought the aggressor on the Lika Front, in Drenov Klanac near the town of Otočac. During the period from 28 September 1994 to 7 March 1995, now as members of the 3rd Krk Battalion of the Croatian Army’s 138th Home Guard Regiment, they carried out an almost six-month mission on the Mala Kapela massif to secure and defend the frontline achieved during combat operations in 1991-1992. And finally, as participants in the military and police operation code-named Storm, on 17 August 1995 Croatian troops from Krk reached the border between the Republic of Croatia and Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The ceremonial muster of Krk’s troops on the waterfront in the town of Krk on 21 October 1995 symbolically marked the end of the Homeland War in this area. During the Homeland War, eight Croatian soldiers from the island of Krk (i.e., with domicile on the island of Krk) and members of the military units from Krk were killed in action.
