Sažetak
The Sisters of the Holy Cross and the Franciscan Friars of the Third Order Regular are connected by many points of contact. Perhaps the strongest of these is the Rule of the Third Order Regular of St Francis, which for both communities constitutes the foundation of following Jesus Christ. On the island of Krk, the point of contact that binds them is found in two communities: one in Glavotok and the other in Porat. In both cases, the sisters arrived at the invitation of the administration of the Franciscan Friars of the Third Order Regular. In the community in Porat, the Sisters of the Holy Cross are still active today, although at one point their continued presence depended on a very fragile thread due to the communist authorities. Divine Providence, even in this situation, redirected the course of history so that the sisters remained and continue to work in Porat to this day. The sisters’ stay in Glavotok was short, lasting two years. Three sisters arrived on 14 February 1951 at the invitation of the administration of the Third Order monastery, to serve as sacristans and to manage the household. The Chronicle records the following: “The Glavotok monastery lies directly by the sea. Five hundred years ago, it was a Frankopan castle. Their former chapel is now the sacristy, and the newly built church has three marble altars. Beside the church is a cemetery, followed by a beautiful olive grove, an orchard, and further away a vineyard. The sisters have their living quarters in a separate house right by the sea, like in Venice.” The presence of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross on the island of Krk is in a special way linked to the monastery of the Third Order Franciscans, as we see that the only place where the sisters are still active is precisely the monastery in Porat and the former Frankopan, now monastic, Church of St Mary Magdalene. Even today, the sisters care for the sacristy and the church. Is the reason for this the western, fertile, lyrical sotto vento (“under the wind”, sheltered) side of the island and the connected area of Glavotok, that is, the forested region of Dubašnica, which in accordance with its name was once full of forests — dub, oak trees — as well as pastures and some arable land? Or is it spiritual connectedness, founded on the Rule of the Third Order Regular of St Francis? Certainly, it is both. What is, in any case, of great importance to us sisters is the sense of communion and the enduring bond between the two monasteries — the Sisters of the Holy Cross and the Franciscan Friars of the Third Order Regular. Even the little that has been recorded gives us reason to believe that much more occurred that was never written down. From the very first day, when the Franciscan fathers, themselves poor, offered the sisters warm tea and bread for refreshment, to their help during a shortage of water in the sisters’ cistern, when the Franciscan brothers, also affected by drought, came to their aid. We must not fail to mention the readiness of the Franciscans to offer consolation and strength for a new beginning through the sacrament of confession, through Sunday and daily Masses and homilies that nourish the faith of all God’s people, and through their constant openness to conversation and cooperation — with the sisters, with guests, and with passers-by. We hope that this will continue, and be even stronger, in the future.
