Sažetak
The paper examines the fact that political philosophy is missing from the list of mandatory modules in the philosophy curriculum and considers whether it is possible to achieve the goals of the curriculum, but also the goals of philosophy teachers’ labour in general, without addressing some key topics of political philosophy. Based on examples of several classic works of political philosophy, the paper attempts to show that without the insights that political philosophy provides students, one cannot speak of students truly having the ability to critically reflect on the world which they live in. The question of the origin and purpose of the state in Plato and Aristotle enables an understanding of the concept of human sociability; the theory of the social contract in Hobbes and Rousseau enables an understanding of human nature as flexible and adaptable in terms of forms of social life; Marx’s critique of capitalism enables the demystification of capitalist social relations and an openness to the idea of social change.
