Sažetak

High costs of sludge (generated during wastewater treatment) management and increasingly stricter legislation prompted the development of environmentally and economically acceptable methods of sustainable sludge treatment. Traditional sludge management methods, such as disposal and composting, are frequently replaced by alternative approaches focused on the recovery of energy and valuable resources from sludge.
Therefore, the paper presents the results of research where different biochemical (anaerobic digestion) and thermochemical (incineration, pyrolysis, gasification) processes of sludge conversion were applied, including technologies to recover energy from sludge, which reduce WWTP operational costs and environmental pollution. In addition, the characteristics of different processes of energy recovery from sludge are described in detail, including their advantages and shortcomings, and data are provided on their efficiency, feasibility and the current status. Furthermore, data are given on technological/economic and social/ecological assessment of some processes of energy recovery from sludge that contribute to the production of environmentally acceptable products, reduce dependence on non-renewable resources, reduce risks to human health and environmental pollution and create a way to ecologically acceptable, economically feasible and socially acceptable, i.e. sustainable sludge management.
