Present-day Turopolje on Early Modern Maps (Summary)
Sažetak
Old maps can be interesting sources and testimonies of the past of individual countries, regions and places. Turopolje is one of the many Croatian historical micro-regions, and it is a representative example of this historical development. Early modern maps, which primarily depict fortresses and castles, contrast with later maps such as Habsburg cartographic surveys, which show a range of different data, such as old roads, river courses, places that have since disap peared or have become part of larger urban settlements. Turopolje sites and the historical region itself have been present on maps since the second half of the 16th century. Through maps by Dutch, German, Italian and Habsburg, and selected Croatian cartographers, a range of information is available about the past of Turopolje. Drawing on the cartographic collection of the National and University Library and the cartographic collection of the Croatian State Archives, the author provides an overview and interprets representations of Turopolje in cartographic sources.
