Sažetak

Sava Kosanović was one of the more prominent politicians during the period of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, the Second World War, and the post-war years, up until the mid-1950s. His political activity reflects an interplay of numerous ideologies, policies, the spirit of the times, as well as political transformations typical of Serbian politicians in Croatia. It is little known that he kept a diary in 1942, which contains numerous entries on a range of topics important to both Kosanović’s political and private horizons. In this paper, based on the analysis and interpretation of excerpts from Kosanović’s diary, we present two selected topics and contribute to their research: his work within the organization the Central and Eastern European Planning Board (CEEPB) and the visit of King Peter II Karađorđević to the United States. Kosanović’s activities within the CEEPB, which sought to promote the post-war reconstruction of the countries of Central and Eastern Europe, are of exceptional importance within the broader scope of his work in exile “official” politics, as well as for the shaping of Yugoslav policies and, consequently, relations with the United States, as evidenced by the entries in his diary. Kosanović’s notes on the King’s visit, in turn, demonstrate that the occasion amplified the existing political divisions among Yugoslav émigrés. In this sense, Kosanović’s diary constitutes a fundamental source for further research on a range of topics concerning the history of Yugoslav emigration.
