Sažetak

Language deficits in psychotic disorders can be observed at almost all levels of language, but they become particularly prominent at the pragmatic level. Linguistic concreteness or the inability to understand and produce figurative language has often been described as a feature associated with psychotic disorders. However, the number of studies interested in the production of this type of language in these clinical populations is limited. The aim of this paper is therefore to investigate the production of figurative language in clinical populations with schizophrenia (F20) and acute schizophrenia–spectrum psychoses (F23), across two elicitation conditions (structured interview and picture description tasks). Figurative language was analyzed qualitatively, drawing on existing psycholinguistic research on figurative language and cognitive–linguistic frameworks of conceptual metaphor and metonymy. The figures identified in the overall corpus include metaphor, metonymy, phrasemes, proverbs, hyperbole and similes. The results of the qualitative analysis showed a preserved ability to produce figurative language in the structured interview, whether the forms were
conventional or novel. Its primary function lies in the verbalization of past and present emotional states. Figurative language, despite the projective nature of pictorial stimuli, is still limited in its number and function in the picture description tasks. Future psycholinguistic research on figurative language production in these populations would benefit from placing greater emphasis on picture description tasks as an elicitation method.
