Nautical tourism in Europe, definition and classification

Nautical tourism has emerged towards the end of the second millennium, as a new kind of tourism with a strong maritime component. Its development has immediately been characterised by a continuous growth at high development rates. In the first stage, it has not been followed by adequate scientific researches. They started towards the end of the last century to continue to present days. If we analyse the present state and dynamics of development of nautical tourism, it is possible to define the main development pattern. Nautical tourism is becoming an economically important type of tourism and proudly bears the name of nautical tourist industry . It is divided into three main kinds: nautical tourism ports, charter and cruising, and is an example of tourist industry which development is economically multifunctional and scientifically interdisciplinary. Being developed in the situation of new relations among competent subjects and based on new development models in which the environment factor is dominating more than ever before, nautical tourism has the role of a leader of economic development of the area in which it developed. It has a special role in the newly formed European economic development models in which local and regional community are the nucleus of strategic economic development. Therefore, an increasing number of researches is a logical response to the dynamic development of nautical tourism in all European and other countries, and national interest is reasonable. In order to obtain theoretical and practical use of the researches and their results, it is necessary to define clearly nautical tourism and classify it, and this article is a contribution to the aim.
