Sažetak

Fragment of a Baroque wall painting in a first–floor room of the former Pauline monastery in Lepoglava was discovered in the course of 2006 construction work. Following preliminary conservation protection and assessment of the condition of plaster layers, a decision was made to remove the fragment from the vault using the stacco method, treat it at the workshop for wall paintings and mosaics of the Croatian Conservation Institute, and upon completion of the construction work, return it to its original location. The reason behind this invasive conservation procedure was the very poor adhesion of the receiving plaster layer to the original brickwork of the vault, as well as the construction work that included pulling down the subsequently built ceiling and a reconstruction of the original vault in brick. All subsequent layers of paint found on the painted layer were removed, and the painted layer on the lacunae was reintegrated with pigments bound with a 2% solution of gum arabic in water. Upon the completion of construction work in 2009, the fragment was returned to its original location by being glued with lime–casein plaster. The found fragment is part of a painted vault medallion depicting a saint in a chariot that is pulled by two lions. On the left and right ends of the fragment there are painted medallions with names of two Pauline monasteries (Remete in Croatia, Marianka in Slovakia), associated with the veneration of the Virgin. Findings indicate that the fragment was part of a painting from a former priory room, painted in 1729, which can be attributed to Ivan Krstitelj Ranger, a renowned
Baroque Pauline painter.
