Literacy as one of the key business competencies

Sažetak
The first competency for lifelong learning mentioned in the National Curriculum Framework (2010) is communication in the mother tongue. In the world of entrepreneurship, but also the world in general, language literacy is often perceived as one's innate knowledge. However, Croatian language lecturers and professors are obliged to raise awareness of the importance of learning the standard Croatian language. Given that entrepreneurship and innovation are among the aforementioned competencies, the aim of this paper is to show the importance of language literacy in the mother tongue with regard to entrepreneurship. Experts and entrepreneurs are exposed to written texts on a daily basis and it seems necessary to master the basic language norms of the academic letter so that they can sovereignly rule the written text within their field of work and interest. Based on the principles of general education and professional orientation, the Croatian language is taught within the chosen profession, but it is also of primary importance to master the basics of the academic alphabet in the Croatian language in order to develop awareness of the standard language as foreign and taught so that language literacy could spread to the professional field. Various language manuals, case examples of mistakes in academic papers as well as scientific papers of entrepreneurial topics have been used in this paper to demonstrate the purpose of learning and adopting Croatian language rules with the final objective of permeation and coexistence of these two areas of interest.
