Sažetak

In this paper authors presented an overview of current global situation regarding various means of application of genetically modified organisms (GMOs).The major accent was given to sources and reasons for a wide theoretical debate on entrance of GMOs in food chain. Also major present and future advantages and assumed disadvantages of application of GMOs in human nutrition were presented. In addition, basic characteristics of principles and guidelines for international trade, control and risk assessment of GMOs, particularly foods derived from GMOs, as well as some major political reflections of global debate on acceptability of use of GMOs for human consumption were described. Finally, current international, regional and Bosnian legislation on GMOs were briefly analyzed.
