Once Upon a Time, It Happened as It Never Happened Before…

Sažetak
The immense popularity of the fairy tales written by the brothers Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm is not decreasing with time. This can be proven by the fact that so many of our contemporaries cannot resist the magic and strong influence of these eternal fairy tales, simply feeling the need to write their own versions. Aliz Mosonyi, a children’s writer from Hungary, decided to retell the following famous stories in her own way: Csipkerózsika [Sleeping Beauty] (2007), Jancsi és Juliska [Hansel and Gretel] (2007), and Piroska és a farkas [Little Red Riding Hood] (2008). Later, Mosonyi also retold a few other fairy tales of the great Germans in her book Egyszer volt, ahogy még sose volt – tizenkét és fél Grimm mese [Once Upon a Time, It Happened as It Never Happened Before – Twelve and a Half Grimms’ Fairy Tales] published by the Budapest publisher Pozsonyi Pagony in 2014. This study analyses the mentioned reinterpretations of Grimms’ fairy tale classics by comparing them to the original texts by the Grimms on the one hand, and, on the other hand, by exploring how illustrations depict fresh witty remarks, subtle humour and thus visually complement the contemporary language that Aliz Mosonyi uses. The author also examines the intermedial
relationship between text and illustrations in the mentioned books, especially in terms of the differences between modern illustrations and those considered as classic ones.
