Sažetak

The Monastery of St. Mary at Glavotok is situated at the extreme north-west point of the island, its “head” (glava otoka), whence it derives its name. Glavotok was first mentioned as far back as 1277 and it was linked to a women’s hermitage with an accompanying chapel. In the mid-15th century, Count Ivan Frankapan donated a church with an estate to the Third Order Franciscans. The Franciscans, led by Fr. Matija Bošnjak Mastilić, built a monastery, and then a new church as well at the beginning of the 16th century. This paper presents the results of rescue and exploratory archaeological work in the Church and (part of the) Monastery of St. Mary at Glavotok. An analysis of the monastic complex, supplemented by new insights, allowed for a reinterpretation of the architectural development of the church and part of the complex alongside the sanctuary. It has been ascertained that the Renaissance Franciscan church from the beginning of the 16th century was built at the site of an earlier medieval Frankapan church. The already set orientation was respected, and the new building even incorporated the entire northern lateral wall of the old church with the remains of frescoes. It was proven that the so-called Frankapan chapel was a profane space that was repurposed into a sacristy in the 16th century. The church’s appearance in the 16th century was ascertained, for it changed considerably after Baroque elements were added in the latter half of the 18th century. The finds of a niche for an organ and a pulpit are interpreted. The new finds of stone sculpture, two stone bracket corbels from the 15th century, are also presented. The catalogue of Glagolite inscriptions has been enhanced with two examples, parts of a gravestone with Glagolitic symbols from 1703.
