Sažetak

Fake news today is a global problem; an adequate and effective response can only beuniversal media literacy. This study aimed to determine the specifics of the informationeducation strategy in countering fake news. The study uses statistical data from theReuters Institute, Open Society Institute, Statista, Pew Research Center, Digital 2023Global Overview Report, and Global Statistics. Based on these data, the article showsthe ratio of Internet users to the total population in the world and China and theimpact of modern technologies on news dissemination. The role of social networks,among other news information sources, was also determined. The study concludesthat technical means have low efficiency in recognising fake news. Therefore, mediaeducation plays the leading role in countering fake news. The study also analysesreports by international institutions and the guidelines of the 20th Congress of theCommunist Party of China on media and education. The analysis reveals the mainstrategic provisions for developing media education curricula: technical, psychological,communicative, and evaluative. The study results can aid in preparing educationalprograms in media literacy.
