Abstract

Owing to numerous changes of government and post-war political developments,
a succession of urban developments in Trieste over the past century the streets of
Trieste became a topic of significant interest. It was in the era of monumentalisation
of the city and its streets and its reconnection with the Kingdom of Italy that the
construction of the Coastal Road took place. The project was developed by
engineers Mazorana and Comel at the conference promoted and organized by
the “Commission for the Promotion of Foreigners’ Competitions” in March 1909,
although it was only in November 1921 that it was realised with the approval of
the first special tender specifications for the project. At this point, the project was
already within the competence of the Technical Office of the Municipality of Trieste,
with engineer Alfredo Camanzi at the helm, who had to navigate delays, project
revisions, and obstacles until the “mutilated” inauguration in 1928. The new road,
considered one of the most important scenic roads in Italy, has redefined the
perspective of access to the city since the 1920s.
