Sažetak

The text provides an overview of the history of settlements in the area of today’s Ližnjan Municipality during the High and Late Middle Ages, based on written and material heritage. After a brief introductory overview of political relations from the beginning of the 12th century to the middle of the 14th century, the text explains, based on the ubication of settlements (towns, villages, hamlets, contrade), the territorial extent of estates in southern Istria having distinct jurisdictional and ownership powers. These were two lay estates (the sovereign estate – Pula regalia and the municipal estate – Pula commune), one church estate (the Fief of St. Apollinaris) and one private estate (the Morosini Fief) from which taxes were collected. The settlements of the Ližnjan region belonged to the communal territory of the City of Pula, however, probably at the end of the 12th century, by the will of the bishop of Pula, the Morosini family obtained three settlements in this communal area of Pula and the right to collect church tithes in them. The chapter on the rule of the powerful local noble family of Castropola/Sergii, and, after their expulsion from Istria, the chapter on the rule of the Venetian Republic, analyse the sources known to historiography regarding tax payments made by the settlements of the Ližnjan region. Owing to these data (tax quantities of wheat and barley), conclusions can be drawn regarding the type of agricultural production and the demographic population of the Ližnjan region, as well as a rough estimate of the number of inhabitants of the territory of the Pula commune. It is concluded in the end that the solid population of this area, which led to a relatively well developed economic, mainly agricultural, activity until the mid-14th century, with the advent of Venetian rule was replaced by stagnation and then by economic decline by the end of the 15th century due to demographic decline and the disappearance of a number of settlements. The causes of such a negative trend, which culminated in the 16th century, were plague epidemics, deadly endemic diseases (malaria), wars and, in the Ližnjan and Pula areas, inert opportunistic Venetian local governance policies.
