Why Rosaries? – The Dialectics of Surprise in Ethnographic Research on the elationship between School Culture and the Development of Students’ Civic Competence
Dorijan Vahtar
Sažetak
The author uses five ethnographic vignettes to chronologically depict a situation in which eighth-grade students brought rosaries to history class. Witnessing the event triggers a dialectic of surprise and the construction of a theoretical framework by which the author attempts to answer the question of what motivated the students to bring rosaries to school. Combining Paul Willis’ concept of cultural production and Michel Foucault’s theory of power, the situation is interpreted as the students’ resistance to the teacher’s specific exercise of power in the classroom, rather than the students’ resistance to the teacher’s civic actions. The article is based on a one-year ethnographic study of the relationship between school culture and the development of students’ civic and citizenship competence in the final year of elementary school.
