Abstract

The Canonical Process for Electing Matej Franjo Krtica the First Bishop of the Unified Diocese of Bosnia or Đakovo and Syrmia occurred in 1773 in the palace of the Apostolic Nunciature in Vienna. It was conducted by the nuncio in Vienna Antonio Eugenio Visconti, while Aleksander Josip Pavić and Marko Franjul were present as witnesses, who answered questions regarding the characteristics of the episcopal candidate and the state of the Diocese of Bosnia or Đakovo and Syrmia. Krtica’s suitability for episcopal service manifested by his outstanding education and the network of acquaintances he had acquired during his studies abroad, but also during his work at the Seminary of Pécs, where, in addition to his educational and pedagogical qualities, he also demonstrated excellent organisational skills. He was on excellent terms with Klimo, the bishop of Pécs, whom he regularly informed about important events regarding the seminary and the progress of the seminarians. The work brings biographical on Krtica’s contained in the records of the process, supplemented with data from other sources, with the aim of reconstructing his life and work until 1773.
