Sažetak
Bishop Juraj Dobrila’s idea of uniting the Diocese of Poreč-Pula with that of Trieste Koper and establishing a boys› seminary (lat. seminarium puerorum) in Pazin is not unknown in the literature, but it is often reduced to a passing note. This paper describes the dual context of this initiative. The first part highlights the significance of the reforms implemented by 1830 in the wider Eastern Adriatic area through the enforcement of the papal bull Locum Beati Petri. The delineation and restructuring of church territories at that time were carried out under pressure from the Austrian authorities and had an impact on the education of the future clergy. The second part, based on literature and archival sources, describes Dobrila›s initiative. It presents the foundations of his proposal, the reactions of both ecclesiastical and secular authorities, and the obstacles encountered. It also addresses the growing opposition to the bishop›s idea, which, at least in part, reflected increasingly tense interethnic relations in the province. The conclusion emphasizes the connection between Dobrila›s vision of the seminary and his worldview, which encompassed religious, social, and national elements.
