Abstract

Halliday (1978), in his theory, states that words realize their potential exclusively in context, dividing word functions into ideational, interpersonal, and textual. Loanwords in the recipient language often possess a distinctive stylistic coloration, making it interesting to analyze their function and the semantic potential they realize in texts. The analysis of the functions of Italianisms according to this theory in the newspaper texts of Miljenko Smoje from the 1970s was conducted by authors Bezić and Čudina Turčinov (2022). In this study, 26 newspaper texts by Miljenko Smoje, written and published in the 1990s in the newspaper Feral Tribune, were analyzed. Italianisms were extracted from the articles, their realized semantic potential and usage were analyzed, and they were divided into three categories: Italianisms with ideational function, Italianisms with interpersonal function, and Italianisms with textual function. The analyzed Italianisms were then compared with the results of the analysis of Italianisms from the 1970s. It was established that in the category of Italianisms with ideational function, there were no changes in semantic potential. Considering the change in context and topics he writes about, different examples of Italianisms with interpersonal function were recorded, while the analysis of Italianisms with textual function established that loanwords can lose their stylistic coloration over time and, depending on the context, their connotation may change.
