Abstract

The conservation of plant genetic resources is essential for maintaining biodiversity and the long-term sustainability of agriculture. This review synthesises existing research on the genetic resources of sour cherry (Prunus cerasus L.), focusing on both traditional and modern conservation methods. It examines ex situ collections, the collection and storage of plant genetic resources in field collections, and cryopreservation as an advanced method for long-term storage. Special emphasis is given to autochthonous and cultivated varieties of sour cherry in the Republic of Croatia, their nutritional values, and proposals for further conservation of genetic material. The paper analyses current challenges and opportunities for improving conservation methodologies.
