Abstract

In 2023, the Parish of Baška marked the three-hundredth anniversary of the beginning of construction of the present parish church of the Holy Trinity (1723–2023). The original parish church, dedicated to St. John the Baptist, stood on a hill that took its name from the church’s patron saint, and around it the original settlement of Baška developed. From the end of the 14th century, when the Venetians burned the old town, and especially during the 15th and 16th centuries, the inhabitants moved down to the lowland area near the sea and founded New Baška, or Primorje. The construction of a new parish church in the center of the new settlement marked the final relocation of the people of Baška. It was not easy for the inhabitants to part with the ancient sacred space that had connected them all, fostered a sense of community, and served as the resting place of their ancestors’ earthly remains. Therefore, even after moving to the lowland area, for the next two centuries they continued to walk on Sundays and feast days to the old parish church on the hill. Time, deliberation, and agreement between the inhabitants and the competent ecclesiastical and civil authorities were required in order to reach an appropriate decision regarding the choice of the location, the size of the sacred space, the method of construction, and all accompanying activities related to the new parish church. This paper seeks to present the historical circumstances in which the people of Baška undertook the construction of a new central gathering place for the faithful. The construction of the new parish church lasted longer than originally planned. The local cemetery remained next to the former parish church of St. John.
