The Stefan George Circle: a Cultural-Intellectual Formation at the Intersection of Aesthetics, Knowledge, And Education

“Starting from my perspective,” goes the oft-quoted remark attributed to the symbolist poet Stefan George, “there is no path to science” (Salin 1948: 249). Yet this formulation is itself a mediated account, attributed to Edgar Salin – an economist and early advocate of interdisciplinary inquiry who maintained personal ties with George. This circumstance alone complicates the apparent opposition between art and science, while also indicating the central concern of this article. The study examines the emergence of a distinctly modern, aesthetically inflected form of cultural knowledge, taking the George Circle as a paradigmatic case. The first section analyzes the artists’ salon as a performative and social space in which fin de siècle aestheticism not only achieved heightened visibility but also stimulated early forms of scholarly reflection. The second section turns to the points of contact between the George Circle and the Heidelberg milieu surrounding the sociologist Max Weber, highlighting the formation of a specifically cultural-sociological mode of knowledge. The third and final section traces the gradual institutionalization of the George Circle within the university system, approached from the perspective of the history of education.
