Abstract

Clinical exercises are essential in the education of nurses and medical technicians. Nursing subjects’ teachers should have and continuously develop the pedagogical and competencies of a nurse in order to be able to provide students with quality teaching that follows progress in nursing. The aim of this study was to investigate the frequency of occurrence of elements of pedagogical competencies of nursing teachers, elements of evaluation, stimulating classroom atmosphere and certain forms and methods of work during the observed clinical exercises. The participants of the study were two nursing teachers and 4 groups of the 4th grade students of the Secondary Medical School in Pula (Croatia). The research instrument was developed according to the document Core competencies of nurse educators with task statements, which was adopted in 2020 by the American National League for Nursing as the leading organization in nursing teacher education. According to the results obtained, it can be concluded that the participants of the research know the theory of health care, possess clinical skills and try to pass it on to students. Results in this paper also indicate that nursing teachers encourage a positive atmosphere during clinical exercises, use formative evaluation and appropriate methods and forms of work.
