Abstract

The paper examines the function and contrastiveness of space in Glorija by Ranko Marinković as possible sources of dramatic conflict. Three dimensions of spatial relations are seen as relevant: the ‘left-right’ contrast, the ‘upstage-downstage’ contrast and the ‘above-below’ contrast both on stage and off, as well as relations between
different scene settings. As Glorija is a miracle play in terms of genre, characteristics of medieval church presentation are present. The use of characters as well as spatial contrast in the creation of dramatic conflict sends a religious-didactic and moral message.
As this a crucial characteristic of this medieval genre, Glorija can justly be said to follow in the footsteps of dramatic conventions established in the Middle Ages.
