Journal was founded in 2005 by Institute of Archaeology (Zagreb) and originally entitled Annales Instituti Archaeologici – AIA. Annales Instituti Archaeologici is an open access journal that publishes preliminary reports, review and professional papers, book and events reviews, including supplements, in the field of Archaeology and related Social Sciences and Humanities. Scientific and professional contributions are subject to two external peer reviews in a double anonymized peer review process. It is published once a year (one volume, one issue), and from volume IX/2013, it is published only in electronic form. The journal is open to all authors without any restrictions (including but not limited to affiliation, organization membership, nationality, gender, etc.), without fees of any kind for the authors or readers, and papers are published in Croatian and English, with extended summary or in full bilingual form. The Journal is published by the national Institute of Archaeology, Zagreb, Croatia, and is financed by the Croatian’s Ministry of Science, Education and Youth. Journal is indexed in WoS Emerging Sources Citation Index and Scopus. Scientific, review and professional peer-reviewed papers published in the journal are assigned a DOI, and authors are recommended to use ORCID identifier. The Editor-in-Chief is a member of EASE (European Association of Science Editors), and the Croatian Association for Scholarly Communication (CROASC).

- Rights: Journal has fully open access. Article submission, processing, and publishing are free of charges. No additional fees of any kind are applied to authors and readers. Readers are allowed to read, download, copy, redistribute, print, search and link to material, and alter, transform, or build upon the material, or use them for any other lawful purpose as long as they attribute the source in appropriate manner according to the CC BY licence. Authors retain copyright and grant the publisher a licence to publish their manuscript as the original publisher and to distribute their content.
