Abstract

Teaching resources and teaching aids can be regarded as synonyms or as two different didactic concepts. In teaching informatics they are most often the source (programs, textbooks, manuals) and the technology − computers (hardware) and computer programs, software, tools). In the subject curriculum they make students centered learning easier, as well as students’ motivation, independence and their own capabilities and interests. The purpose of this paper is to explore the possibility of using open source software tools in teaching computer science, due to the fact that most computer programs are one of the so-called closed-source software, which is based on commercial principles and financial compensation. It is known that there is another group on the market – an open source software. The study was conducted among IT teachers in secondary schools (14 teachers) and the following was determined: open source software is used to a lesser extent in school, the only exception are image and sound editing programs; the main reasons for such a rare use of open source software is that schools have purchased a license and already have closed-source software installed and that textbooks describe such software; teachers have a positive attitude about how to use an open source in teaching and would support its introduction.
