Abstract

Education as a profession entails the problem as to how we can evaluate whether it is really up to professional standards and what these standards are. By and large these standards are defined in terms of teachers' competencies. Thus a number of lists have emerged to specify what a teacher should be able to do and what he has got to learn. These lists are merely enumerative. They are not based on a systematic approach. In contrast to this practice a different approach is put forward. To competence to show something to someone else is taken as the essence of teaching and educating. This is what every teacher has to master. Showing is the specific, indispensable operation of any kind of education and should therefore be the basis of the pedagogical evaluation of education.
