Abstract

The first part of the article is discussing the basic determinants of the concept of environmental education and the problem of educational transfer of environmental knowledge particularly regarding the dominance of scientific and technical knowledge or scientific and technical way of thinking.
The other part of the article presents the results of the research on thematic structure and the volume of presence of ecoloČgic subject matter in the curricula plans and programs of secondary and high schools in Croatia. The research has been made in 1993 on a sample of 23 high schools in Croatia.
The analysis has shown that the environmental education in Croatia is still in the beginning phase and that all the difficulties characteristical for the first steps appear to be present: "breaking the environmental subject matter to bits" and then including them into different subjects of the curricula, treating the environmental education as part of the natural sciences programs etc.
Further development of the concept of the environmental education and its realisation requires better insight in its realisation in schools and other institutions in Croatia, and particular respect should be paid to the experiences of industrially highly developed countries.
