Abstract

Functional food is a new category in a wide range of food products, which consumers are increasingly demanding in recent years, due to the fact that it has certain health benefits. According to FUFOSE Program (Functional Food Science in Europe) of the European Commission, there is no precise definition of functional foods but a working definition has been introduced, according to which food can
be regarded as a functional if it is proven that it has beneficial effect on one or more target functions of the body, in addition to appropriate nutritional effects, in a way which is important for improving the health condition and/or reducing the risk of disease development. This paper brings a brief overview of the importance of functional food products in human nutrition and some reasons that influence consumers to buy or not to buy functional foods when purchasing.
