Abstract

The novel Theatrical Café (1988) by Sunčana Škrinjarić is a chronicle of
Zagreb’s life in the 1950s. As the culutral node of the urban core and the
synecdoche of Zagreb, Theatrical café was a meeting place of the young
generation, bohemians and artists. For such visitors café has a multiple
function: it becomes a substitute for family home, forerunner of catwalk
for young girls and the place of philosophic and artistic discussions. The
novel closes the period of modernism (to whom the one of the boundaries
is Marinković’s Cyclops) and announces the postmodern time.

Keywords

cultural synecdoche of the city; outsiders; city muse; symbolic androgynouses.
