Abstract

The aim of the paper is to explain problems of dictionary defining of a
part of Croatian kinship terminology, which, because of many regional
and speaking differences, represents a complex structure for its lexicographic
description. After a short review of literature about Croatian kinship
terminology, on the examples of defining certain terms in dictionaries
of contemporary Croatian language, the author will try to show different
approaches in their defining, especially stylistic marking. Certain results
will be obtained by comparing one part of kinship terminology contained
in the contemporary Croatian dictionaries with a dictionary of kinship
terms in the Croatian language written by Franjo Tanocki in 1983. While
doing that it will be kept in mind that some of the terms are not entered
with all of their manifestations because of author’s intention to standardize
system of terminology which he writes down. The author will also try
to show some of changes which lead to narrowing of contemporary classification
of kinship terminology.

Keywords

kinship terminology; lexicographic entry; stylistic features.
